Punjab is struggling under a devastating heatwave, with the temperature reaching record levels in the state. Bathinda has emerged as the hottest city in India with a colossal 47.6°C—the highest temperature in Punjab in 13 years and equaling the Amritsar record in June 2012. The average temperature of the state has also risen by 0.3°C in the last 24 hours to 5.4°C above normal.

Heatwave alert in 18 districts

The Meteorological Department has also put out a heatwave warning for 18 districts covering Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Firozpur, Faridkot, Bathinda, Fazilka, Muktsar, Mansa, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Barnala, Moga, Sangrur, Patiala, Mohali, and Fatehgarh Sahib. Day temperatures in all major cities continue to remain above 43°C, and the nights will also be excessively hot.

Electricity demand at all-time high

The constant heat has driven electricity demand in Punjab to an all-time high of 16,249 MW, a rise of 625 MW from the day before. This is a result of both the heatwave and continued paddy cultivation. Powercom has confirmed that it can supply up to 16,900 MW, but any increase above that could result in power cuts.

Weather outlook

  • June 13: Heatwave conditions can be expected to continue in many areas of the state.
  • June 14–16: Relief could come in the shape of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at scattered places.

Today's forecast

  • Aritsar: Fair sky, 29°C–45°C
  • Jalandhar: Fair sky, 27°C–43°C
  • Ludhiana: Clear skies, 28°C to 45°C

Background

Heat of such magnitude was unknown in Punjab after June 2012, when Amritsar recorded 47.6°C as the last time. The ongoing spell is setting new records and evoking mass anxiety over public health and infrastructure.

Advisory

Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses as the state endures this unprecedented heatwave.
