
Chandigarh, March 4: Expressing concern over the depletingground water level in the state, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha today passed aunanimous resolution urging the Punjab government to take immediate steps forsaving the ground water of the state.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha Mr Rana KPSingh today announced to constitute a high level committee for exploring theways and means to recharge the water table. The decision came after MLA MrKuldeep Singh Vaid, while participating in the debate on deteriorating groundwater table in the state, proposed the constitution of a committee to study thematter. Immediately swinging into action the Speaker of Vidhan Sabha announcedto constitute the committee which would submit the report within three months.
The Speaker said that the matter was too serious and as theworthy members of the house have taken up this issue so it is the moral duty ofthe house to intervene in the matter. Mr Rana KP Singh urged the Punjabgovernment to depute the Principal Secretary Water Resources department forassisting the committee. He said that besides looking into this grave matterthe Committee will also propose ways and means to recharge the water table sothat this precious natural resource can be saved for the coming generations.
Unanimously welcoming the announcement of the Speaker, theentire house thanked him by thumping the tables . Taking part in discussionCabinet Ministers Mr Manpreet Singh Badal and Mr Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwasaid that water is the most precious resource for human existence. They saidthat the state government led by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh isduty-bound to save the water for our coming generations. Both the Ministerssaid that the government is already sensitised towards this issue and no stonewill be left unturned for this noble cause.
Earlier, the discussion on this crucial issue was embarkedby MLA Mr Harminder Singh Gill whereas Leader of opposition Mr Harpal SinghCheema, MLAs Rana Gurjit Singh, Mr Harinderpal Singh Chandumajra, Mr KuldeepSingh Vaid, Mr Gurpratap Singh Wadala, Mr Aman Arora, Mr Kanwar Sandhu andothers also took part in discussion.
