PV Sindhu beats China’s Bingjao to win bronze in women's singles

It is Sindhu's second medal at the Olympics after she won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics

Indian shuttler PV Sindhu won the bronze medal in women's singles badminton at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday.

Sindhu defeated China's He Bingjao 21-13, 21-15 at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza to add a second medal to India's tally at the Olympics 2020.

With this addition, India is at number 59 in the world ranking and has a silver and a bronze medal. The silver medal was bagged by Mirabai Channu in weightlifting. 

It is Sindhu's second medal at the Olympics after she won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She also becomes the first Indian woman and second Indian to win two Olympic medals. To date, Sushil Kumar was the only Indian who has won two Olympic medals – the Bronze medal in Beijing in the 2008 Games and his bagged second (silver) medal in London Olympics and became the country’s only individual two-time Olympic medallist.

With Sindhu's bronze, India has now equaled its tally of 2016 Rio Olympics.

On Saturday, PV Sindhu faced heartbreaking defeat against world no. 1 shuttler Tai Tzu Ying from China Taipei. Sindhu lost the semi-final by 18-21 and 12-21. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated India’s Badminton star and tweeted, “We are all elated by the stellar performance by PV Sindhu. Congratulations to her on winning the Bronze at Tokyo 2020. She is India’s pride and one of our most outstanding Olympians.”

President of India Ram Nath Kovind congratulated Sindhu for bringing glory to India and tweeted, “P V Sindhu becomes the first Indian woman to win medals in two Olympic games. She has set a new yardstick of consistency, dedication and excellence. My heartiest congratulations to her for bringing glory to India.”
