Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday slammed the Karnataka State government for barring the hijab (veil) inside the classroom of the educational institutions. Rahul Gandhi came up with 'Ma Saraswati' analogy to critisie the administration for banning hijab-wearing students from the classroom. On Saraswati Puja, Rahul Gandhi took to his Twitter handle and stated that 'Ma Saraswati' (Goddess Saraswati) does not differentiate and therefore banning students from the classroom for wearing hijab is like robbing the future of daughters of India.

"By letting students’ hijab come in the way of their education, we are robbing the future of the daughters of India. Ma Saraswati gives knowledge to all. She doesn’t differentiate," wrote Rahul Gandhi.
However, Rahul Gandhi's take on Hijab ban was not taken well and many netizens on his post commented their views. One of the users shared that women in Afghanistan are protesting against the Taliban against the Burqa system, however, in India women are fighting for Hijab. Another user dug an old tweet of Congress leader & Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot who had stated that in the 21st-century women should not remain in veil. Here are some reactions to Rahul Gandhi's take on Hijab row:

What is Hijab Row?

In December 2021, four students belonging to a particular community were denied entry into the classroom for wearing hijab (headscarf). The students accused the Principal of the pre-university college of taking such a step and also claimed that they were made to sit outside of the classroom at the stairs and even marked them absent. However, the Principal denied the claims of the students and had stated that the students made the allegations under the influence of some vested interest groups. After the row over Hijab intensified, Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh had emphasized the need for a uniform dress code in order to avoid such incidents in the future.

Karnataka HC to hear students' plea on Hijab row

The Karnataka High Court will take up the petitions filed by students of the Government Pre-University College for Girls, Udupi, demanding permission to attend classes while wearing 'hijab', on February 8. The students in the petition have submitted that the college authorities have refused them the right to attend classes only because they wear hijab. They have further requested the court to issue directions to the government to not to interfere with their religious and fundamental rights. They mentioned that wearing hijab is an essential part of their religion.
