The answer is yes and no at the same time. Directed by Varun Grover, All India Rank is a semi-autobiography that shows joy, confusion, love, doubt, hope, and cynicism that comes to in almost every IIT aspirant. Talking about All India Rank True Story, Varun Grover reportedly in an interview had confirmed that the film was a semi-autobiographical slice-of-life dramedy and a time capsule of life in the India of the 1990s.
The movie revolves around a 17-year-old student from Lucknow, Vivek. He was sent to Kota in 1997 forcefully by his parents to prepare for IIT. Vivek's curse is that he was a school topper, so the expectations from him are very high. The geeky kid strives for ordinariness, and begs not to be 'sent' to Kota. But his father, RK Singh (Shashi Bhushan), is a small-time divisional engineer who makes it clear that the family's future rests on Vivek's narrow shoulders.
Notable, Grover has not revealed the real name of the student or IIT aspirant on whose life All India Rank is based on.
