Supreme Court orders political parties to furnish details of contesting candidates on website

On Thursday, the Supreme Court has ordered political parties to furnish details of pending criminal cases against candidates contesting elections so as to bring more transparency and accountability in the election process.

Information on cases, offences and trial stages should be published on party websites, in one national newspaper and one vernacular newspaper. Through publications, the party must tell a suitable reason for choosing candidates.

The apex court has also directed to furnish the compliance report with the Election Commission of India within three days of a candidate's selection.

However, proceedings for contempt to court can be initiated if the details will not be provided to the desired authorities or posted online.
