A high-drama scene was seen in zone D on Monday morning as workers of Rashtriya Safai Karamchari Mahasangh arrived there to organize a protest against the contractual system for the recruitment of employees in the Municipal Corporation. The protesters demanded the locking of the MC zone D office to convey their protest.

A few of the protestors caused a commotion at zone D office and also reportedly vandalized the premises. Sensing that the situation was getting beyond control, the police were summoned and compelled them to arrest the protestors.

Punjab president of Rashtriya Safai Karamchari Mahasangh Vicky Sahota and others had last week submitted a memorandum to the officials of the municipal corporation protesting against the contract system.

A 72-hour ultimatum was also issued to end the contract system. The protesters marched up to Municipal Corporation Zone-D after the expiry of the ultimatum at 10:30 am on Monday.

They wished to close the office to vent their ire, but the police officials already posted at the main entrance of the office cautioned them against protesting on the grounds of the directions of the Election Commission. But the protesters did not give up. They began raising slogans at the main entrance.

The zonal commissioner, Jasdev Singh Sekhon, also approached the crowd to disperse the protest. A group of mischievous individuals among the protestors began causing a ruckus. The hooligans got into a fight with Jasdev Sekhon when he prevented them from doing so.

Causing a commotion, they attempted to forcefully gain entry into the Municipal Corporation building. They reportedly smashed the glass of the main entrance. On witnessing the destruction of government property, the police staff also had to play hard.

They pushed back the crowd. In the struggle, police staff and protestors were also injured.

Municipal Corporation DSP Raj Kumar Chaudhary also reached the location and called the police of police station division number 5. The police station arrested half a dozen persons, including Vicky Sahota.

The arrested persons were taken to Police Station Division Number 5. MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal has directed his officers to register an FIR against those who committed the act of vandalism in Zone D.
