Supreme Court takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Dhanbad judge death, seeks report from Jharkhand DGP

The death of Jharkhand’s judge Uttam Anand has shaken the judicial system across the country. Additional district and sessions judge was killed by an unidentified vehicle on Wednesday.

On Friday, the Supreme Court took Suo Motu Cognisance of the alleged killing of the additional district judge, Uttam Anand. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said that the apex body would always address the safety and security of the judicial officers in the country. 

The bench headed by the CJI NV Ramana said that lawyers and judicial officers have been allegedly attacked many times, inside and outside the court. This prompted the CJI Ramana to take the Suo Motu Cognizance on the issue. CJI said that this court wants to “address the safety and security of judicial officers in the country.”

The court further said that the report related to the detail of the probe from the Jharkhand government must be released within a week. 

The Supreme Court said that the status report of the Jharkhand government will have to be filed on the issue of law and order situation inside and outside the court premises in Jharkhand. 

The case was echoed in the Supreme Court on Thursday. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said that he has connected to the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court telephonically. He added, Jharkhand High Court has taken up the matter on the judicial side. 

On Thursday, CJI Ramana assured the SC bar, “The high court has issued notice to the police and district officials. They are hearing this matter today. Let them handle it. It does not require interference by us at this stage. I have spoken to the Chief Justice this morning.”

Uttam Anand, was killed after an unidentified vehicle smashed him when he was on his daily morning walk. The incident was recorded and according to the recorded footage, a three-wheeler rickshaw turning towards Uttam Kumar on a deserted road and hitting him intentionally. The judge succumbed to his injuries around 8.30 am on Wednesday.
