American electric vehicle (EV) and clean energy company led by Elon Musk has initiated talks to set up its research and innovation centre in Bengaluru keeping the end of 2020 as a deadline.

According to a report, the company had a discussion with the officials from the Karnataka government for setting up a research facility. The discussions are in the primary stages. A follow-up meeting will be held later in this month. The meeting will be attended by State Government officials and speculations are made that a detailed proposal will be presented to Tesla executives.

"Tesla has shown initial interest to invest in a research and innovation centre in Karnataka and talks are at a preliminary stage," as per the sources. In July, CEO Elon Musk had hinted that the luxury car company will "hopefully" come to India soon.

If everything goes well, India will be the second country outside the US where Tesla will have a research centre. This development comes after two months when CEO Elon Musk showed his interest to bring Tesla's electric card in India. Last year in July, while interacting with the students of IIT Madras, Musk had also indicated the same intentions to launch Tesla cars on Indian roads by 2020.

Backed support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has offered a land somewhere near a port to start with their technology.

Karnataka is also the first state to launch and implement electric vehicle policy. With promising startups such as OLA Electric, Sun Mobility and Ather. The policy hopes to generate investments of 31,000 crores in EV R&D and manufacturing.
