The victim, Kanta Devi who had long suffered from deteriorating eyesight, had sought the expertise of Dr J.S. Thind, a reputed ophthalmologist associated with the hospital. The doctor assured her that a surgical procedure could restore her vision to up to 40%. Trusting in the doctor's expertise, she underwent the surgery with high hopes.
