In Tokyo Olympics 2020, the discus throw event was paused because of the heavy rain and slippery conditions with Kamalpreet Kaur at the seventh number of the board. All athletes managed to make the first two throws out of three. Kamalpreet’s first throw was 61.62m away and she intentionally dropped the second throw and was disqualified. 

It is expected that the event would resume at 5 pm. For now, USA’s Allman Valarie is at the first number on the board with her first and best throw of 68.98m.

This year, she has scripted history and has become the first Indian athlete to qualify for the final in the track and field event in Olympics. For now, she stands at a chance to win a medal if she manages to throw close to her personal best. 

Earlier, on the same day, Kamalpreet received best wishes from Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. Punjab CM wished her and said make all of us proud beta! His tweet read, “Best of luck to our Discus Thrower Kamalpreet Kaur for her final. I will be watching your competition live today afternoon at 4:30 pm here. Do your best Beta and make us all proud.”

On Saturday, she qualified for the finals after standing 2nd in the match, she had thrown 64m throw in all, 60.29m throw in the start, and 63.97m in the second attempt. The 1st position was held by USA’s Valarie Allman.

Kamalpreet entered directly to quarter-finals of Tokyo Olympics 2020 after she threw discus ahead of the qualification benchmark for Olympics is 65.5m. With her 65.06m throw, Kamalpreet Kaur has become India’s first woman to throw a discus at a distance of 65+m.
