Tokyo Olympics: Kamalpreet Kaur Finishes 6th in Discus Final with Throw of 63.70m

Kamalpreet Kaur qualified for the final after throwing 64m, the 2nd best in the qualification round

The women’s discus throw finals started today at 4.30 PM and in the beginning, the throw was of 61.62m and USA’s Allman lead the throw with 68.98m throw. She fouled her second attempt; the best shot of 68.98m was thrown by Valarie Allman and is still leading the scoreboard. The heavy rain caused difficulty for the players to throw the shot and the match was put on hold.

 

On 31st, 2021, Kamalpreet had her group B match is which she stood 2nd after USA’s Valarie Allman, who held the 1st position. In the beginning of the match she threw a 60.29m throw and her second attempt was better and was 63.97m. Her final and the best score was 64m.

Kamalpreet Kaur hails from Kabarwala village in Punjab’s Sri Muktsar Sahib District. The Punjab girl has become 10th Indian in track and field events to directly secure a position at Olympics by qualifying the benchmark set by the World Athletics. Kamalpreet Kaur is an Indian Railway employee and represents the Railways in the National level tournament.

 

She had secured a direct qualification to the Tokyo Olympics for herself during the 24th Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championship held at Patiala. She has broken the National Record of Krishna Poonia of 64.76m. With her 65.06m throw, Kamalpreet Kaur has become India’s first woman to throw a discus at a distance of 65+m. This time she has defeated Asian Games Gold medallist Seema Punia. She was U-18 and U-20 National Champion in the year 2016.

During her childhood days she wanted to become a professional cricketer but looking at her physique her physical education teacher at school asked her to try out shot put before an inter-school competition. She switched to discus throw in the year 2014 and worked hard during the Covid-19 lockdown to keep her Olympics dream alive. She still wants to build her career in cricket and has said that cricket is her passion and she wanted to perform well in that too.
