‘Unfortunate & very disappointing’: Sonia Gandhi on Congress state poll performance

Mrs Gandhi added that the Congress Working Committee which is the highest decision-making body will be meeting soon to review the poll results.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday termed the party’s performance in the last month’s state assembly elections "unfortunate, disappointing and unexpected". 

Mrs Gandhi added that the Congress Working Committee which is the highest decision-making body will be meeting soon to review the poll results. 

The recently concluded assembly poll results that were declared on May 2, the Congress could not register a win in any state and it’s only in Tamil Nadu where the party contested along with DMK as its partner and managed to win 18 seats. 

Addressing the party MPs on Friday during a virtual meeting, she said: "Most, unfortunately, our performance in all the states was very disappointing and if I may say, unexpectedly so. The CWC is meeting shortly to review the results but we as a party collective must draw the appropriate lessons from this setback in a spirit of humility and honesty,” and she also congratulated Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The Congress had on May 2 had said that the party will "study" the results, correct mistakes and do a course correction. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had said things on similar grounds.

Several senior Congress leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma and Kapil Sibal have called for introspection over the party’s poor performance in the elections over the years,
