Pfizer says its vaccine is highly effective on Indian variant

The US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has offered 5crore vaccine doses to India with certain terms and conditions.

Pfizer has said that its anti-covid vaccine is highly effective on the Indian Covid19 variant which is believed to be the reason behind the second wave of coronavirus in the country. Seeking fast-track approval, Pfizer has told Indian authorities that its jab is suitable for everyone aged 12 years or above.

The vaccine can be stored for a month in cold storage facilities with a temperature range of 2-8 degrees celsius.

Pfizer has demanded regulatory relaxation in India including indemnification and relaxation in the requirement of post-approval bridging trials and dispensing the requirement of testing their vaccine in Central Drugs Laboratory.

The US giant Pfizer has indicated the availability of 5 crore vaccines for supply this year. The company has offered to supply 1 crore vaccine in July, 1 crore in August, 2 crores in September and 1 crore in October. Pfizer has demanded to deal only with the government of India. Payment of vaccines will have to be made by GOI to Pfizer India.

Pfizer Inc. and the Government of India have held serious meetings over the past few weeks to solve the issue of legal indemnity. Some of the meetings were also attended by Pfizer Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla.

Currently, three vaccines are approved for use in India which are Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V. However, Pfizer has insisted that its vaccine comparatively provides high protection against the infection.

Also, neither of the vaccines are approved for use on people below 18 years of age. Whereas Pfizer has claimed that it can be used in people aged 12 or above.
