Yoga is seen as a sacred and spiritual practice, in India. A video has gone viral on social media in which people are seen practising ‘Beer Yoga.’ Yoga being a sacred and deeply rooted practice in the Hindu religion, the video obviously has sparked widespread outrage in India. On social media, people can be seen claiming that the ancient Hindu practice has been diluted and distorted by the practitioners.

The video shared by Curly Tales on its YouTube channel in July 2017, has resurfaced on the internet and now people are naming the video as “contamination of ancient Hindu practice”.

Other elements of the viral video, like captions of ‘Om Chug Chug” and “Yoga to try this” are also criticised for hurting Hindu sentiments.

Practising yoga is a part of Indian culture. It has been rooted in the Hindu religion for thousands of years. Yoga is described as a practice to become one with God, and a way to heal human minds, bodies, and souls.

Yoga in Bhagwat Gita is described as - “Yoga is the journey of the self, to the self, through the self.”

Considering the same, the viral video has received great criticism in India. Many people took to Twitter to show their anger about the practice called “Beer Yoga.” A Twitter user said, “Yoga is for feeling good without any such chemical substances. During Asanas- body release certain fluids- putting Beer etc- starts a battle in body and harms it.” Another user wrote, “Failed attempt at cultural appropriation by the west. They are reluctant to practice true yoga with shlokas and mantras as they fear the attraction of Goras towards Sanatan Dharma. So, this is how they destroy it.”

People also urged the Ministry of Health to take action on this, saying it is damaging people’s health and also the great practice of Yoga.
