Guillain Barré syndrome also known as GBS, is a rare autoimmune condition in which immune system attacks peripheral nerves. More than 100 cases of GBS syndrome have been reported in Pune, Maharashtra.

A state health official stated, “The total number of GBS cases Sunday increased to 101, comprising 68 males and 33 females. Of these, 16 patients are on ventilator support. One suspected death has been reported in Solapur.”

According to an analysis by the state health department, out of the 101 patients, 19 are below 9 years, 15 patients are in the 10-19 age group, 20 in the 20-29 age group, 13 in the 30-39 age group, 12 in the 40-49 age group, 13 in the 50-59 age group, 8 in the 60-69 age group and one in the 70-80 age group.

What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?

GBS syndrome affects peripheral nerves, which control muscle movement, pain signals, and temperature as well as touch sensations. It causes issues related to these functions.

Guillain-Barré syndrome leads to symptoms like numbness, tingling and muscle weakness which can further progress to paralysis. But with treatment, most people fully recover from the condition. This disease can occur at any age, but it most commonly affects people between the age group of 30 and 50.

Symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome:

The initial symptoms of Guillain-Barré syndrome include muscle weakness and tingling sensations. They usually affect both sides of body and starting from feet and legs, it further spread up to arms and face of the patient. Muscle weakness in the legs may make it difficult for the patient to walk or climb stairs.

However, in severe cases, the patient can suffer deep muscular pain in the back and/or legs, patient may experience near-total paralysis, chest muscle weakness, difficulty in speaking as well as swallowing, difficulty in moving eyes and vision issues.

As per Cleveland Clinic, there’s no known cure for GBS syndrome. However, some therapies can lessen the severity of the condition and shorten the patient’s recovery time.
