If you’re using an older smartphone, you might lose access to WhatsApp starting tonight at 12 AM, i.e., from June 1, 2025. Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has announced that the messaging app will stop working on a range of older iPhone and Android devices that no longer support the latest software updates.
This decision is part of WhatsApp’s regular policy to discontinue support for outdated operating systems. Devices running on such systems often don’t receive critical security updates, which can pose a threat to user data and privacy. By phasing out these devices, WhatsApp ensures that users get a secure and seamless messaging experience.
Which Phones Will Be Affected?
The app will no longer function on the following devices:
iPhone Models:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
- iPhone 6s
- iPhone 6s Plus
- iPhone SE (1st Generation)
Android Devices:
- Samsung Galaxy S4
- Samsung Galaxy Note 3
- Sony Xperia Z1
- LG G2
- Huawei Ascend P6
- Moto G (1st Generation)
- Motorola RAZR HD
- Moto E (2014)
What Should You Do?
If your phone is running on iOS 15.1 or Android 5.1 (or any version above), there’s nothing to worry about—WhatsApp will continue to function normally.
However, if your device is on the affected list or runs an older version, it’s recommended to:
- Check for software updates in your phone’s settings.
- Update your device if possible.
- Backup your WhatsApp chats to avoid losing important messages.
- If updates aren’t available, consider upgrading to a newer device that supports the latest OS versions.
