Who was Tyre Nichols and what happened with Memphis Police?

Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old father, was on his way home from taking pictures of the sky on January 7, when police pulled him over. He was just a few minutes from the home he shared with his mother and stepfather, when he was killed in what authorities have described as a brutal attack by five Memphis police officers, who have since been charged with second-degree murder and other offenses. After the police brutality case became a matter of controversy and people started protesting asking for justice for Tyre, five Memphis police officers were fired and charged with murder and other crimes on Thursday. The officers, who are all black, each face charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression. Now, with the release of the bodycam video of Tyre Nichols murder, the people of America are enraged and have been protesting nationwide.

As per US media reports, the Memphis Police Department initially said that Mr. Nichols had been stopped on suspicion of reckless driving. However, the Memphis police chief, Cerelyn Davis, said in an interview with NBC that the department had not been able to confirm why Mr. Nichols had been stopped. Several officers tred to forcefully pin Nichols to the ground, shouting expletives and threats. In the released video, Nichols can be heard saying, 'OK! I am on the ground,” and: “You guys are really doing a lot right now. I'm just trying to go home.” Seconds later, officers appear to use a stun gun on him. He breaks free and starts running south on Ross Road, with at least two officers running after him.

At least two police cars arrive at the intersection where Nichols was initially stopped. The officers asked for his location. One of the four videos released by the city of Memphis shows Nichols was already on the ground less than half a mile from where the traffic stop occurred. Officers slapped and pushed Nichols, who was heard screaming, 'Mom!' Notably, Nichols’s mother’s house was 60 yards away from where he was killed by the (now suspended) Police officers.
