World Public Service Day 2021: What does it mean? Why is it celebrated?

Every year, world public service day is celebrated on June 23, this day celebrates the value and virtue of service to the community.

United Nations Public service day is celebrated on June 23rd, across the globe, every year. The day recognizes the fact that the world’s successful governance is built on the foundation of competent civil services. This day highlights the contribution of civil servants and recognizes their efforts. This day also encourages youth to pursue a career in the public sector.  

On Public Service Day, the efforts made by the public servants are recognized and praised. Every year, the United Nations (UN) holds a Public Service Awards ceremony to reward the creative achievements and contributions of the public service workers and institutions worldwide.

Many public service organizations and departments, across the globe, hold events to recognize the efforts and hard work of the public servants in improving society. 

This year due to the global pandemic, all events would be held through virtual mode. This year, United Nations Public Service Day would be celebrated by the Division of Public Institutions and Digital Government of the United Department of Economic and Social Affairs, in collaboration with the government of the United Arab Emirates. This virtual event would be conducted for 1.5 hours. 

This year, the world public service day would be celebrated under the theme – “Innovating the future Public Service: New Government Models for a New Era to reach SDGs.”

The objective of the event:

The event would concentrate on the increasingly eccentric role of innovation and technology in delivering public services. This event would also examine that how to prepare a better future for the public services in this new era of technology and innovation. 

During the event, lessons learned from the past years would also be highlighted, as many countries in the world have been thrust into the digital era, quickly adopting and innovating as well as using online mechanisms to continue their work during the pandemic.
