World Science Day for Peace and Development is marked every year on November 10, since 2002, to highlight the importance of science and the significant role it plays in society. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) society needs to engage in wider public debates on the emerging scientific issues. The day also spotlights the crucial contribution of science in the everyday lives of people.

Apart from highlighting the importance of science, the day links science and technology in the growth of a peaceful society, ensuring that humans are updated about the scientific discoveries and advancements happening for the progress of society. Stressing on the role of scientists in expanding the spectrum of knowing the planet, the day underlines frameworks of the society that would help it become more sustainable, said UNESCO in a statement.

Celebrating the day began after the World Conference on Science in Budapest took place in 1999. It was not like any other conference,  rather it seeded a mentality, setting up a concept of commitment towards science and its application in society, reflecting the positivity science brings on the society and lives of humans. The conference brought to the spotlight the usage of scientific knowledge to achieve more humanistic and materialistic goals in societies.
