On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Government of Punjab announced a new welfare program titled Mukh Mantri Mawan Dhian Satikar Yojna, under which monthly financial assistance will be transferred directly to adult women’s bank accounts across the state.

The scheme was announced under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann as part of the state’s social welfare initiatives in the 2026–27 financial year.

Direct monthly financial support

According to the announcement, the scheme will provide ₹1,000 per month to all eligible adult women in Punjab through direct bank transfers. Women belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community will receive ₹1,500 per month.

The scheme will cover all women aged 18 years and above, with certain exclusions. Women who are current or former permanent government employees, current or former MPs or MLAs, and income tax payees will not be eligible.

Officials stated that around 97% of adult women in Punjab are expected to qualify for the program. Women already receiving benefits under existing social security schemes—such as old-age pensions, widow or destitute pensions, and disability pensions—will still be eligible for this scheme.

The state government has allocated ₹9,300 crore for FY 2026–27 to implement the initiative.

Objectives of the scheme

The program aims to:

  • Promote economic independence among women

  • Strengthen women’s participation in household decision-making

  • Improve health and nutrition outcomes

  • Encourage education and aspirations among girls
