Panic gripped Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district after a three-and-a-half-year-old boy fell into a 300-foot-deep borewell while playing near his house in Chak Samana village on Friday evening.
According to reports, Gurkaran Singh alias Vansh slipped into the borewell around 4 PM while playing in nearby fields. Officials said the child is believed to be trapped deep inside the narrow pit, while rescue teams continue efforts to bring him out safely.
Authorities stated that water is present inside the borewell and movement of the child has been detected through cameras inserted into the pit. The child was reportedly seen crying and appearing frightened.
Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain said the child may be trapped between 10 to 20 feet below, though some sources claimed he could be around 90 feet deep. Four JCB machines have been deployed to dig a parallel pit for the rescue operation.
AAP MP Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal, Minister Ravjot Singh and SSP Sandeep Kumar Malik reached the spot to monitor the situation. Teams from NDRF, SDRF, fire brigade, health department and ambulances remain stationed at the site.
Family members revealed that the borewell had been installed nearly 15 days ago. A surrounding pit was dug for fitting a 15-inch pipe, but the area was allegedly not filled properly afterward. Due to the sandy soil, the child slipped into the empty gap alongside the pipe rather than directly inside the borewell.
The child’s mother said her son cried for help while falling and the family tried desperately to grab him, but could not reach him in time.
Villagers and members of Baba Deep Singh Seva Dal, led by Manjot Singh Talwandi, are also assisting the administration in rescue efforts as the operation continues late into the night.
