A tragic road accident was reported on the Jalandhar-Moga National Highway near Ladra Adda on Tuesday evening. The accident, which occurred at around 5 pm, allegedly resulted from the negligent movement of a tractor-trolley loaded with paddy straw. The three victims were close friends and kabaddi players. Two young men lost their lives and another sustained critical injuries in the accident.
Preliminary Information
According to preliminary information, the three young men were travelling on a motorcycle from the Malsian side towards Jalandhar. As they approached Ladra Adda, a tractor-trolley loaded with paddy straw was reportedly parked on the roadside. Police said the tractor driver suddenly drove the vehicle onto the highway without checking for approaching traffic. The motorcycle, which was travelling behind the tractor-trolley, crashed directly into the bundles of paddy straw protruding from the rear of the vehicle. The impact caused the rider to lose control, throwing all three youths onto the road. Moments later, they were struck by another trolley approaching from behind, making the accident even more devastating.
Reported casualities
Two of the friends died on the spot due to severe injuries, while the third was critically injured and rushed to a hospital in Jalandhar for treatment.
Identities of the victims
The deceased have been identified as 16-year-old Harjot Singh, son of Tirath Singh and a Class 12 student from Pandhera village, and 23-year-old Gurdeep Singh, alias Deepa, son of Angrez Singh from Khanpur Dhadda village. Family members said Gurdeep had completed all preparations to travel to the United Kingdom in the coming days, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking.
The injured youth has been identified as 17-year-old Hardeep Singh, son of Sarabjit Singh and a resident of Billa Chao village. He remains under treatment, and his condition is reported to be serious.
Accused driver
Following the accident, the tractor driver allegedly attempted to flee the scene. However, local residents chased him down, apprehended him and handed him over to the police. Station House Officer Parlavinder Singh of Sadar Police Station said the bodies have been shifted to the Civil Hospital mortuary in Nakodar for post-mortem examination. He added that the accused driver has been identified, and legal proceedings will be initiated based on the statements of the victims' family members.
Efforts by the authorirties
Local MLA Inderjit Kaur also visited the Civil Hospital soon after the incident to meet the bereaved families and offer her condolences. Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal accident.
