Amritsar: The son of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch was shot dead in a firing incident in Amritsar on Monday night. The victim, identified as Tirath Singh, was returning after paying obeisance at a gurdwara in Chite Kalan village when armed assailants allegedly opened indiscriminate fire on him and his friend.

The incident took place in Chite Kalan village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Chatiwind police station. According to police information, around seven to eight rounds were fired during the attack.

Tirath Singh sustained critical gunshot injuries, while his friend, Ranjit Singh, was also injured in the firing. People present at the spot rushed the injured men to the hospital, where doctors declared Tirath Singh dead on arrival.

Old Rivalry Suspected

Police suspect that the murder may have stemmed from an old rivalry. According to the complaint filed by the victim’s brother, Karaj Singh, the family had a dispute with a group from the same village.

Karaj Singh, who is a Block Samiti member, told the police that he had recently won the sarpanch election on an AAP ticket. He alleged that members of the rival group were responsible for the attack.

Four Accused Named in FIR

Based on the family’s complaint, the police have registered an FIR against four people identified as Gurdit Singh, Gurjant Singh, Harkirat Singh alias Hockey, and Gora.

All four accused are reportedly absconding, and no arrests had been made at the time of reporting. Police teams are conducting raids to trace and apprehend them.

The police have deployed additional personnel in the area. Investigators said the probe was ongoing to establish the exact motive behind the killing and determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
