In a significant development, a local court in Ajnala has remanded Amritpal Singh to two-day police custody in connection with the high-profile Ajnala police station attack case.
Amritpal Singh, who heads Waris Punjab De and represents Khadoor Sahib in Parliament, was produced before the court through video conferencing from Dibrugarh Central Jail. Punjab Police teams have been camping in Assam for the past three days to complete legal formalities and secure his transit remand.
The case pertains to the February 2023 incident at Ajnala Police Station, where supporters of Amritpal Singh allegedly stormed the police station demanding the release of an aide, leading to a major law-and-order situation in the region. The incident had triggered nationwide attention and raised serious concerns over public safety and policing.
During the court proceedings, Punjab Police sought custody to further interrogate Amritpal Singh regarding his alleged role in mobilising supporters and the sequence of events leading to the confrontation. The court, after hearing arguments, granted two days of police remand.
Sources indicate that the police are likely to question him on planning, communication networks, and individuals involved in the incident. The investigation agencies are also expected to examine digital evidence and links with other accused persons.
Amritpal Singh has been lodged in Dibrugarh jail under strict security provisions, and his production via video conferencing was carried out due to security and logistical considerations.
Officials said the custody period will be crucial for the investigation as Punjab Police aims to consolidate evidence in one of the most sensitive law-and-order cases in recent years.
