Heavy rainfall since early morning has drastically changed the weather across multiple districts in Punjab. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a warning that on October 6 and 7, several parts of the state could experience very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.
According to the IMD, the next 48 hours are highly critical, and people have been advised to remain cautious during this period due to the likelihood of intense rain.
Earlier this morning, the Bhakra-Thien Dam released approximately 80,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water, prompting warnings of potential rise in water levels in downstream regions.
Alert for 13 Districts
As per IMD Chandigarh forecast, Mansa, Bathinda, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, and Fatehgarh Sahib are likely to witness heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
Meanwhile, a rain warning has also been issued for the remaining districts of Punjab, though of lesser intensity.
Due to the continuous rainfall, the water level in dams is increasing, prompting authorities to gradually release water in a controlled manner to reduce pressure on the reservoirs.
Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with local administrative advisories.
According to the Meteorological Department, a low-pressure system is currently active over Punjab, resulting in widespread cloud activity.
High humidity and strong upper-level winds are strengthening the system, leading to heavy precipitation across the region.
IMD has revealed the technical reason why Punjab weather is all set to change from October 5. IMD's official release reads, "A Western Disturbance is likely to become active over Northwest India from October 4, 2025. It is expected to affect the Western Himalayan region and the adjoining plains of Northwest India during 05th to 07th October 2025."
