After months of delay dug-up stretches and repeated deadline extensions Jalandhar’s road situation is finally showing signs of movement again as major repair and construction work has picked up pace across key city routes and with the monsoon season approaching questions are being raised on whether city’s roads are actually ready to handle heavy rain and waterlogging especially in areas that have seen long disruption due to ongoing Surface Water Project.
Talking about the current situation Jalandhar Mayor Vaneet Dhir said that most of the road work in city is now nearing completion and claimed that around 80% of the work has already been done and according to him the majority of roads are monsoon-ready and the remaining work is being pushed at a faster speed to ensure minimal inconvenience to the public in coming rainy season.
One of the most affected stretches Manbro Road from GTB Nagar near Manbro Chowk to Ravidas Chowk had remained in a badly damaged condition for months with broken patches, uneven surfaces, dust and constant traffic jams had made daily travel difficult for commuters especially office workers, school transport and local businesses that depend on this route and now after a long pause active construction and repair work has restarted on this stretch, giving some relief to regular users.
The Mayor said the delay in road work was mainly due to Surface Water Project which required large-scale digging across multiple parts of city for laying pipelines and explained that this project had slowed down road restoration work and created major obstacles but now the situation is improving as coordination has increased and work is moving forward again.
At the same time residents say the reopening of work is a positive sign but timely completion will be important as for them the main concern is not just repair work starting again but whether it will be finished properly before the monsoon intensifies as unfinished patches could again lead to flooding and traffic issues.
In contrast some parts of the city have already seen improvement and the stretch from Dr BR Ambedkar Chowk to Workshop Chowk passing through busy points like Football Chowk, Adarsh Nagar Chowk and Kapurthala Chowk has been repaired recently and this has improved traffic flow and reduced congestion giving commuters a glimpse of what smoother roads can feel like.
Earlier the Municipal Corporation had set a March 31, 2026 deadline for completing several civic works including road repair, sanitation and infrastructure upgrades however delays in projects like the Surface Water Project which involves laying around 98 km of pipeline and was originally meant to be completed much earlier pushed timelines further but with penalties already imposed on executing agency for delays and authorities increasing monitoring officials now say efforts are being made to speed up pending work and residents are hoping that this time the progress will actually translate into fully repaired and monsoon-ready roads before heavy rains hit city.
