Amritsar police are probing the killing by a gunshot of Dharamjit Singh alias Dharam, a convict in the 2012 murder case of ASI Ravinder Pal. Dharamjit Singh was killed late Thursday night outside his residence in Cheharta Dawaiyaan Wala Bazaar after parking his vehicle.
He was on 14-day parole issued on September 12th. Three attackers who were sitting on a motorcycle launched the attack around midnight, local ACP Shivdarshan Singh stated.
The Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang took responsibility for the murder through a viral message. The gang identified Harry Chattha, Keshav Shivala, Amrit Dalam, and Sikandar Canada as the culprits.
The message identified Dharam as being with their competitor Bambiha gang and cited his strong relationship with Doni Lahnde. The gang threatened that supporting their enemies in and out of jail would be rewarded with fatal repercussions. The post also sent a terrifying message to others of surprise attacks anywhere or at anytime.
The history of the case is that of the murder of ASI Ravinderpal Singh, committed on December 5, 2012, in Amritsar, Punjab.
Ravinderpal Singh was murdered attempting to safeguard his daughter Robinjit Kaur against harassment by Ranjit Singh Rana, a former political figure who belonged to the Akali Dal party.
Reports stated that Ranjit Singh Rana had repeatedly harassed Robinjit Kaur. On the fateful day, Rana arrived at the place accompanied by a few friends, and a brutal fight ensued.
Rana initially shot Ravinderpal Singh in the leg close to Chheharta and then briefly left. Yet he returned with another gun to press on with the attack. In the course of the shooting, Robinjit Kaur was also injured.
Dharamjit Singh, alias Dharam, and three other men, Sandeep Rampal, Gurbir Singh, and Vikram Ohri, were accompanying Rana during the attack. These men were subsequently arrested and booked in connection with the murder of ASI Ravinderpal Singh.
The court convicted Rana, Dharamjit Singh, and the rest, and sentenced them to hard life imprisonment. The case received wide attention as it was a case of cold-blooded murder of a police officer in service while protecting his family's honor. It also brought forth concerns of political interference and criminal violence
Dharamjit's body has been handed over for postmortem as the police continue to probe the murder site and the gang complaint. The incident indicates recurring gang rivalries and violence on account of long-standing feuds in the region. Further updates regarding the case are awaited as investigations are underway.
