To significantly improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion throughout the Chandigarh Tricity area, Centre has now authorized Rs 1,463.95 crore for the construction of a six-lane, access-controlled greenfield spur in Punjab. This marks a crucial part of the projected 'Tricity Ring Road' project. This new corridor will connect Zirakpur Bypass with the Ambala–Chandigarh segment of National Highway 205A. According to the Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari this initiative aims to decongest the major urban junctions in Mohali, Chandigarh and Panchkula by rerouting the heavy traffic flow away from the city roadways.

Key sections of NH-44, NH-205A, and NH-152 currently experience frequent bottlenecks as a result of increased interstate traffic.

The new spur is anticipated to improve the traffic flow and significantly reduce strain on roadways. The project is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity in addition to providing a big urban relief.
According to the Union Minister, the corridor would speed up and streamline movement to Himachal Pradesh, especially the Shimla area, cutting down on travel time for both regular commuters and visitors.
