Bus Stand in Punjab shut down as roadways protestors and Police come at loggerheads

In a major development, multiple Bus Stands in Punjab on Friday were shutdown as roadways employees started protest yet again. Jalandhar Bus Stand was shut down on Friday morning as roadways employees started to protest against Kilometer Scheme and detention of their union leaders in Chandigarh.

The protestors blocked the entry of private buses into the bus stand. Not only this, but the protestors parked all government buses inside the depot. It brought Jalandhar Bus Stand that is being run by the government to a complete halt.

Due to Punjab Roadways Employees protest, private buses operated from the roadside outside the stand. Union leaders have warned that the strike would continue indefinitely. Notably, it is the third protest in the past two months.

Roadways Employee Protest in other Punjab cities

As per reports, in Sangrur, an employee attempted to set himself on fire by pouring petrol on himself. The SHO of Dhuri reportedly suffered burns while trying to stop him. He has been hospitalised.

In Ludhiana, a roadways employee climbed a water tank at a bus stand.

Reports of clashes between Police and Protestors are also coming.

In Budhlada, Mansa, three employees climbed a water tank with bottles of petrol. They said that they will set fire to the bus if the government doesn't reverse its decision on the kilometer scheme tender.

In Patiala, clashes broke out between police and roadways employees. Police detained several employees.

Why the unions are protesting?

As per reports, Contract Workers Union is protesting against kilometer scheme. They claim that opening tenders for private buses will cause losses to the state exchequer. The union is also demanding the regularization of contractual employees.
