In a move against the drug menace, the Commissionerate Police Jalandhar on Monday carried out a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) at the city’s bus stand under the state-wide campaign “War Against Drugs.” The operation, officials said, was aimed at curbing the smuggling of narcotics through public transport and strengthening public safety in one of the busiest transit hubs of Punjab.

The drive was held under the supervision of Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur and Joint Commissioner of Police Sandeep Sharma. On the ground, the exercise was led by ACP Model Town, along with the SHO of Division No. 6 and the in-charge of the Bus Stand Police Post. A total of 40 police personnel were mobilised and divided into multiple teams to ensure a systematic and effective search.

As part of the operation, police personnel thoroughly checked buses arriving and departing from the stand, while passengers’ luggage and vehicles parked in the vicinity were also inspected. The PAIS mobile application was used to verify the criminal records of suspicious individuals on the spot. To further enhance security, CCTV cameras installed at the bus stand were reviewed to confirm that all were functioning properly.

Senior police officials said such exercises form a critical part of the broader anti-drug strategy. “Public transport is often misused by traffickers to move contraband, and operations like CASO are designed to plug such routes and instil a sense of security among commuters,” a police spokesperson said.

The Commissionerate Police also highlighted that these surprise operations would continue across the city to choke the supply lines of narcotics. Officials stressed that public cooperation is essential in the fight against drugs. Citizens have been urged to cooperate during such checks and to immediately report any suspicious or illegal activity to the police control room by dialing helpline number 112.

Monday’s operation, police officials said, is part of a wider network of checks being conducted at key public places, including railway stations, to ensure that the drug trade is disrupted at every level.
