CM Mann announces 15% hike in minimum wages, brings confidence motion over false claims

On Labour Day Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced a 15% increase in minimum wages calling it a long-pending decision after 13 years and said the hike will apply to both government and private sector workers. Speaking in the Assembly the CM also addressed the Confidence Motion saying that while the Aam Aadmi Party is united and does not strictly need such a motion it has been brought due to false rumours being spread and highlighted the party’s growing position in national politics through electoral wins at different levels and urged that the motion be passed unanimously.

A long pending issue

On the occasion of Labour Day Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced a 15% increase in minimum wages for workers in the state and added that minimum wages had not been increased for the past 13 years calling it a long-pending issue.

Applies to both public & private sector

The Chief Minister stated that the revised wages will apply to both government and private sector workers and added that the Labour Department has enough funds to support this increase and also said that two previous governments failed to take this step and it took his government four years to implement it.

Talks about the role of education

Talking about improving the lives of workers Mann said that education plays a very important role and shared that he recently met students from government schools who cleared the JEE Mains exam and added that many of these students were children of labourers. He said that just a few years ago these students were not even aware of such exams but now they are confident and ambitious.

Talked about Chicago’s movement

He explained that schemes like ration cards may help provide food but only education can truly change the condition of families and improve their future. The Chief Minister also spoke about the importance of Labour Day saying it is a day to honour workers and remember their sacrifices. He referred to the historic labour movement that began in Chicago and paid tribute to those who lost their lives.
