A traffic police personnel allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol caused chaos on the city roads late Thursday night i.e. 2nd July 2026. This misconduct and irresponsible behaviour of a police official raised serious concerns and questions on security. The incident was reported to the higher authorities and strict legal actions were taken against him.
Series of events
According to reports, the incident began near Workshop Chowk, Jalandhar where the traffic policeman was allegedly driving recklessly and reportedly tried to ram into several vehicles. BJP leader Aarti Rajput claimed that her car was also targeted. She followed the police vehicle and eventually stopped it near Maksuda Police Station. According to the political leader, the accused identified as Jatinder, was heavily intoxicated. She immediately informed senior police officials and recorded videos of the incident, which later spread widely on social media. She further claimed that the policeman created a disturbance on the road and initially attempted to flee before being stopped again. She also added that she offered the policeman to accompany her to his residence looking at his condition.

Actions by the police
Soon after receiving the information, police officials reached the spot and took the traffic police personnel into custody. Rajput demanded medical examination of the accused to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol. She also urged the authorities to initiate appropriate legal action against him under the relevant provisions of the law. Taling about the incident, ADCP Traffic Gurbaz Singh said the department acted promptly after the videos surfaced on social media. He said that, on the directions of Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Satinder Singh, IPS, the concerned traffic police personnel was immediately removed from active field duties and a departmental inquiry was ordered.

In an official statement, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of discipline, professionalism, and accountability. The department stated that it follows a zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct and assured that strict action will be taken against any police personnel found violating departmental rules or the law. Officials added that further action in the case will be taken based on the findings of the departmental inquiry. It was informed by Gurbaz Singh, , ADCP Traffic that the police personnel was suspended, following the misconduct.
