In a major development in bribery case that witnessed the arrest of Punjab's Ropar Range DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, CBI recently questioned him and the 'middleman' Krishanu Sharda face-to-face.
Recently, CBI took former DIG Bhullar on 5-day remand. The Central Investigative agency informed a Chandigarh court that it is essential for the CBI to interrogate the former DIG in custody as fresh evidence have been recovered.
After the court granted the remand of Bhullar to the CBI, the former DIG and 'middleman' Krishanu Sharda were questioned face-to-face on Saturday evening. It is being said that Krishanu has received several crucial details during the questioning. It has been allegedly found that Krishanu ran a network of extortionists from Mandi Gobindgarh. He would provide information about those involved in wrongdoing to Bhullar.. On his inputs, Bhullar allegedly used to summon them, threaten them, and extort money. In return, Krishanu received a commission.
The CBI has recovered numerous evidence from Krishanu's mobile phone, based on which the agency is now investigating DIG Bhullar's mobile phone, WhatsApp calls, and chats. As per report, the agency has also found clues to Bhullar's benami properties worth crores. The investigation is now focused on how far this bribery network extended and who else was involved.
It seems like CBI and the Punjab Vigilance Bureau are coming face-to-face in Bhullar case. For the unversed, Punjab Vigilance Bureau filed a petition in the Mohali court seeking a production warrant for Bhullar in connection with a separate disproportionate assets case. VB registered the DA case against Bhullar on October 29.
However, the CBI opposed the plea, arguing that the Vigilance case pertained only to property ownership and that Bhullar’s physical custody was not necessary for investigation.
