Former Enforcement Directorate officer Niranjan Singh has confirmed that he will join Shiromani Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), the party associated with Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, on Wednesday.
Niranjan Singh said he had retired from service five to six years ago and expressed concern over the continued drug problem in Punjab, despite repeated promises by successive political parties to eradicate it.
“Punjab needs a change,” he said, explaining his decision to enter the party.
Niranjan Singh Was Involved in High-Profile Investigations
During his tenure with the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Niranjan Singh was associated with investigations into several high-profile cases. He had also questioned Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in connection with a drug-related case.
Criticises Successive Governments Over Punjab’s Issues
Explaining his political decision, Niranjan Singh said he felt he had no other option, alleging that successive governments had failed to provide relief to the people of Punjab.
He said the state had been governed by the Akalis around a decade ago, but people did not receive the relief they had expected. He also criticised the government led by former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, alleging that it had protected people involved in the drug trade.
Singh said drugs were not the only concern facing Punjab, adding that corruption and law and order were also major issues requiring attention.
Amritpal Singh’s Father Invited Him to Join the Party
Niranjan Singh said all governments had failed to deliver on their promises to the people. Referring to the cases against Amritpal Singh, he said the law would take its course and that the court would decide the matter.
He further disclosed that Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, had visited his residence on Wednesday and appealed to him to join the party.
