A tragic incident from Faridkot came into light when a 25-year-old man allegedly died after injecting himself with a narcotic substance, prompting his family to demand strict action against the alleged drug suppliers. The grieving family has also refused to perform the last rites until an FIR is registered and a copy of the case is handed over to them.
Identification of the deceased
The deceased has been identified as Jaswant Singh, son of Jagdev Singh, a resident of Araiyanwala Kalan village in Faridkot. He is survived by his wife and a one-and-a-half-year-old son.
Background of the incident
According to the family, Jaswant had been struggling with drug addiction for nearly one-and-a-half years. His father alleged that he used to purchase narcotics from a few people in the village. On the evening of the incident, Jaswant reportedly returned home with a suspected narcotic substance, went into the bathroom, and injected himself.
About five minutes later, family members became concerned when he did not come out. They found him lying unconscious with froth coming from his mouth and an injection still inserted in his arm. He was declared dead shortly afterwards.
Statements to the police
Jagdev Singh said the family has already recorded its statement with the police and named the individuals they suspect were supplying drugs to his son. He stated that they will not conduct the funeral until the police formally register an FIR against the accused and provide them with a copy of the case.
Illegal drug smuggling
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over the continued availability of illegal drugs in Punjab. While police regularly conduct anti-drug operations and raids in areas known for drug trafficking, residents question how narcotics continue to reach users despite repeated crackdowns.
SHO Faridkot
Responding to the incident, Rajesh Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Sadar Faridkot Police Station, said police reached the spot after receiving information about the death. He confirmed that the deceased's father had alleged his son was addicted to drugs and had named three villagers in his statement.
The SHO said a case is being registered against the three accused based on the complaint. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and further legal proceedings will continue according to the findings of the investigation.
Further investigation
Police have stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem and forensic examination, while the investigation into the alleged role of the accused is underway.
