Additional District and Sessions Judge Special Court in Jalandhar has sentenced Ranjit Mandal to life imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 1,10,000 under various sections for the murder of his two innocent children in a case that dates back to December 11, 2020. The court also declared that if the fine is not paid then the convict would have to serve an additional year of imprisonment.

The court has acquitted the convict’s brother Sanjit, mother Veena and sister Pooja in the case. The complaint was filed at the Patara Police Station by the deceased children’s mother, Rangili Devi, who originally hails from Darbhanga district of Bihar and were residing in Patara, Jalandhar. She has alleged that her husband, Ranjit Mandal had taken away their two children: daughter Anmol and son Armaan alias Rakesh after a domestic dispute. In her complaint, Rangili Devi has stated that the accused suspected her character and frequently used to abuse her physically. She revealed that on the day of the incident, the dispute escalated after which Ranjit forcibly took the children with him after which neither the children nor Ranjit returned. Later, the family initiated a probe to search for the missing children and after some time the bodies of the two innocent children were recovered from a pond in the village.

The police had registered a case following this and initiated a probe after which Ranjit Mandal was arrested. During the initial investigation it was revealed that the family discord was the main reason for the murders, and the accused was found guilty and now has been sentenced in the case. During the trials, the accused’s brother Sanjit Mandal, mother Bina Devi and sister Pooja Devi were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
