Former Punjab Police officer Raj Jit Singh Hundal has expressed his willingness to surrender before the Supreme Court, following which the apex court has directed him to surrender and adjourned his plea for further hearing on October 1, 2026.
A two-judge Bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Augustine George Masih was hearing Special Leave Petition (Criminal) No. 15843/2026 — Raj Jit Singh Hundal vs State of Punjab & Others on September 10.
The petition arises from the July 20, 2026 judgment and order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in CRM-M No. 1161/2025.
During the hearing, Senior Advocate Amit Rawal, appearing for Hundal, submitted before the Bench that the petitioner was willing to surrender. The Supreme Court recorded the submission and said that the matter was being adjourned to facilitate the petitioner’s surrender.
“In the meantime, the petitioner shall surrender.”
The Court has listed the matter for October 1, 2026.
The Bench also made an important clarification: after surrender, Hundal will have the liberty to file an appropriate application. This means the September 10 order does not decide the merits of Hundal’s challenge. The immediate development is that Hundal has indicated his willingness to surrender, the Court has directed him to do so, and the matter will be considered again after the surrender.
Raj Jit Singh Hundal is a former Punjab Police officer who served as SSP, Moga. His legal proceedings have been connected with investigations arising from the wider issue of the drug menace in Punjab.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had been monitoring proceedings relating to drug abuse in the state for years in CWP-20359-2013, Court on its own Motion vs State of Punjab. Court records show that, during those proceedings, allegations concerning Hundal’s alleged association with former police official Inspector Inderjit Singh were directed to be investigated by a Special Investigation Team.
The SIT comprised senior police officers, including Siddharth Chattopadhyaya, Prabodh Kumar and Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, according to the High Court’s record.
In subsequent proceedings, Hundal challenged the action taken against him. The High Court records show that proceedings included FIR No. 1 dated June 12, 2017, registered at the STF police station, SAS Nagar, under provisions of the NDPS Act and IPC.
The High Court’s cause lists subsequently identified CRM-M-1161-2025, Raj Jit Singh Hundal alias Raj Jit Singh vs State of Punjab and Others, as the “Bhola matter”, with the record referring to a February 7, 2025 High Court order concerning bail.
Hundal is now required to surrender before the next consideration of the matter. After surrender, the Supreme Court has expressly kept open his liberty to file an appropriate application.
The Supreme Court will next take up the matter on October 1, 2026.
The September 10 order itself does not contain a final determination on the allegations or the merits of the Special Leave Petition.
