

Punjab is witnessing chilling winters and temperature is expected to drop even more in the coming days. In general, Punjab and other Northern states witness peak winters in December and January. Punjab Winter is famous or infamous for bone chilling cold. At times, some areas of Punjab have recorded 0°C. For instance, Adampur in2 024 recorded 0.6°C. A few days later, Faridkot shivered at 0.4°C in 2024.
Now, the question arises has Punjab ever witnessed snowfall in winters in its history?
The answer is yes. Although snowfall in Punjab is a rare phenomenon, the state has witnessed occasional snowfall in some areas.
As per Indian Express Report, in 2012, probably for the first time in the recorded history of Punjab, several villages of Pathankot and Hoshiarpur districts experienced snowfall.
The report also listed areas where snowfall was experienced in Punjab
The people of Badani,Dunera,Dharkalan,Bhundal villages,which are located five to seven kilomenters from Pathankot city,and villages including Alera, Chareha, Slagru, Kartoli, Bhavnaur, Darapur, Bholl Badmania, Sukhchianpur, Birring, Kumahi Devi in Talwara block of Mukerian Subdivision of Hoshiarpur district witnessed snow fall for nearly 90 minutes.
Met Department official was also quoted who had informed that hill stations like Shimla, Manali, Chamba and Dalhousie have witnessed light to moderate snow. In such a case, snowfall in the low-lying hill areas of Punjab was unusual.
