The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed the regular bail application of suspended Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harcharan Singh Bhullar on Monday. The suspended DIG had been in judicial custody since his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a high-profile bribery case.

Accused in bribery charges

Suspended Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harcharan Singh Bhullar was arrested on October 16, 2025 from his office located in Mohali. Bhullar was accused of accepting bribes through intermediaries, and subsequently, raids were conducted on his premises that reportedly yielded over Rs 7 crore in cash along with other valuables.

Disproportionate assets case under probe

The suspended DIG is also under the scanner of Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), where a separate case of disproportionate assets is also currently under investigation.

Bhullar approached High Court

The suspended officer had approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, following rejection of his bail plea by a special CBI court in Chandigarh on January 2. Filing a petition, Bhullar had argued that the CBI had concluded its investigation and already filed the final charge sheet on December 3, 2025. He argued that this eliminates the need for further custodial interrogation. In his petition, Bhullar also emphasized that most prosecution witnesses are official personnel or protected complainant, reducing any risk of tampering and also noted that there was no bribe money recovered from him directly.

High Court rejects bail plea

Responding to the petition of Harcharan Singh Bhullar, the Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled these contentions insufficient and rejected the plea, ensuring that Bhullar will continue to remain lodged in Model Jail (Burail).

Multiple setbacks to Bhullar

The series of setbacks faced by Bhullar seem to be adding up. Prior to this court order, multiple attempts made by Bhullar seeking relief were also derailed. A CBI court had denied default bail in a related disproportionate assets case back in December 2025, the High Court refused to stay CBI proceedings and the Supreme Court declined interim bail or intervention in the same month.
