A serious accident took place late on Wednesday evening outside Doaba Hospital in Jalandhar as an overspeeding vehicle lost control and crushed several cars parked in the hospital car park.
The vehicle was traveling at a very high speed when it suddenly veered off towards the parked cars. Four vehicles including an ambulance, a Tagore vehicle, a Grand Vitara, and a doctor's vehicle were wrecked in the accident. The force of the collision was so intense that it even knocked down an electricity pole standing close to the hospital entrance.
Fortunately, the accident occurred sometime between 2:30 am in the night, when the road outside the hospital was nearly deserted. Police authorities claimed that had pedestrians or attendants of patients been on the road, the result could have been much more disastrous.
The sudden crash noise generated panic in the neighborhood. Locals informed the press that they came out of their houses on hearing a huge explosion-like sound. They reached the scene and saw the wrecked cars, pulled-down power pole and the speeding vehicle.
Individuals who were present at the location were able to bring the car to a halt and apprehended the driver before he could flee. Shortly thereafter, the police were notified and arrived at the location. The driver was arrested and the wrecked vehicles were taken away from the location to make room.
ADCP Akrishi Jain confirmed that the accident happened near Doaba Hospital at 2:30 am. "A speeding vehicle rammed some parked cars and knocked over an electric pole. The driver has been arrested and further investigation is on," she said.
The electricity supply to the locality was interrupted for a short time because of the knocked-down pole but then resumed. Police have filed a case and are investigating now if the driver was drunk or if rash driving was responsible.
