In a major development, residents of Jalandhar Ambedkar Nagar near Chowgitti Chowk have been served with a 24-hour eviction notice by Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (Powercom).
Punjab Powercom has claimed ownership of around 65 acres of land, alleging that nearly 800 houses in the locality are built on encroached property.
The Powercom has served the notice after winning court case over Ambedkar Nagar land.
On the other hand, residents of the area allege that their houses were built with funding under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Prime Minister's Housing Scheme), and they will not abandon their homes.
A woman living in Ambedkar Nagar stated that they have been living in their homes for several years, but now they have suddenly been served a notice by the Power Corporation.
They will not leave their homes and will fight to the death to save them if the government takes action against them.
The woman stated that they received Rs 175,000 under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to build their homes, and with that money, they are living here. Now, if their houses are demolished, where will they go?
However, when asked about their land documents, they stated that they do not have proper documents, but only temporary documents. They have been living in the area for many years, so they will not be able to leave their homes. The women stated that the Power Corporation can take the money from them, but they will not leave their homes at any cost.
