Jalandhar doctor accused of harassment & financial fraud after wife commits suicide

Family alleges years of harassment and ₹2.5 crore loan fraud by husband after Jalandhar victim's death

The death of Dr. Meenakshi Sood a doctor who was posted at a government hospital in Kapurthala has sparked widespread discussion in Jalandhar after her family made serious allegations against her husband Dr. Piyush Sood of National Eye Care Hospital.

Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.

Got married in 2018

According to Dr. Meenakshi's father Pramod Kumar she married Dr. Piyush Sood in October 2018 and the family alleges that after the marriage a Mahindra Thar vehicle was purchased through a loan taken in Dr. Meenakshi's name and they also claim that she herself was paying the loan installments from her salary.

Mental & physical harassment

Deceased's family has alleged that Dr. Meenakshi faced mental and physical harassment for a long period and her mother claimed that Dr. Piyush would allegedly assault her daughter and later call to admit his mistake and apologise. The family has further alleged that he was involved in an extra marital relationship with a woman working at the hospital and according to the father Dr. Meenakshi became suspicious of alleged relationship and checked CCTV footage from hospital. The family claims the footage showed Dr. Piyush with the woman and that the video was later handed over to police. A CCTV video allegedly showing Dr. Piyush with a young woman has also surfaced on social media and family members have claimed that the footage is genuine.

Attempt to strangle

The father further alleged that his daughter had previously informed him about incidents of physical abuse and he also claimed that there had been an earlier attempt to strangulate her however these allegations have not been officially confirmed and police investigation is ongoing.

Loan taken on Meenakshi’s name

The family has also raised concerns regarding loans allegedly taken in Dr. Meenakshi's name and according to her parents, loans worth around ₹45 lakh were taken in her name for the vehicle and matters related to the hospital and they further alleged that when Dr. Meenakshi recently visited a bank while planning to purchase a house she discovered that a loan of approximately ₹2.5 crore existed in her name. The family claims that her signatures were not present on the loan documents.

According to her father the discovery of alleged loan caused significant stress to Dr. Meenakshi.

Had been living separately since June 2025 

He also stated that she had been living separately from Dr. Piyush since July 2025 due to ongoing disputes and alleged abuse and he said she was planning to buy her own house in June 2026 and was also considering divorce proceedings.

Pramod Kumar stated that his daughter had expressed a desire to end the marriage and said the family was preparing to pursue a legal divorce through court. The father alleges that the combination of marital disputes, alleged harassment and financial issues caused severe mental distress to his daughter.

Post-mortem report awaited

Meanwhile Dr. Meenakshi's mother said the family is waiting for post-mortem report and does not want to draw conclusions regarding exact cause of death until all facts are established and she stated that only investigation and medical findings would determine whether it was a case of suicide or if other circumstances were involved.

Police probe begins

Providing details of the case Station House Officer (SHO) Sushil Kumar of Police Station Division No. 6 said that the incident occurred in morning and that a dispute between the couple had been reported and he further stated that a case has been registered under Section 106 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to the SHO accused husband has not yet been questioned, his phone is currently switched off and legal procedures are underway.

ASI Satpal of Police Station Division No. 6 stated that police reached the residence in Keval Vihar after receiving information through control room and according to him Dr. Meenakshi was found lying on the floor inside the house.

Police contacted her father and began proceedings based on his statement.

ASI said that domestic help informed a local woman from area about the incident who subsequently alerted the police and added that all doors of house were locked. In the presence of others a windowpane was broken to gain entry after which Dr. Meenakshi was found lying on the floor.

Further action awaited

Police officials have stated that further action will be taken based on post-mortem report evidence collected during investigation and statements from concerned individuals and the family has demanded a thorough probe into the case and arrest of Dr. Piyush Sood if evidence establishes his involvement in any wrongdoing.
