Jalandhar Police have made a major breakthrough in the double murder case that took place in the Tilak Nagar area under the Bhargav Camp police station on June 12 and an accused, identified as Shubham, also known as Gullu, was injured in a police encounter early on Tuesday morning after he allegedly opened fire at the police during an attempt to arrest him.

July 12 double murder

According to Police Commissioner Satinder Singh, the double murder took place on June 12, when 24-year-old Simranjit Singh and 23-year-old Saurabh were attacked by a group of youths in the Tilak Nagar area of Jalandhar, following this Simranjit Singh died on the spot after being shot, while Saurabh was admitted to a private hospital for treatment but died the following day due to his injuries.

Absconding since incident

Police said Shubham Gullu had been absconding since the incident and acting on a tip-off about his movement, the police set up a checkpoint near Nakha Wale Bagh to intercept him, according to the Police Commissioner, the accused arrived near the checkpoint, and when police officers tried to stop and arrest him, he allegedly opened fire at them. Police then retaliated.

Shot in the knee

During the exchange of fire, Gullu was shot in the knee and injured and he was taken to a hospital for treatment, Police Commissioner Satinder Singh said the accused fired three to four rounds at the police, while the police fired four rounds in response during the encounter. 

The police said Shubham Gullu is linked to the Joga Pholdiwal and Karan Sehgal gang. Karan Sehgal has also been named in the same double murder case.

Previous criminal records

During the investigation, police also found that Gullu has a previous criminal record and according to the complaint filed by the families of the victims after the June 12 incident, Gullu and his accomplices had allegedly planned the attack in advance. The complaint stated that the accused were waiting for the victims and intercepted them while they were on their way to a hospital.

Series of the incident

The families alleged that after stopping the victims, the accused immediately opened indiscriminate fire, following which Simranjit Singh died at the scene, while Saurabh later died during treatment at a private hospital.

The encounter marks an important development in the investigation of the double murder case. Police said the operation was carried out after receiving specific information about the accused's location and the injured accused is currently undergoing medical treatment. Police continue to investigate the case and are carrying out further action in connection with the June 12 double murder.
