A shocking case involving the death of 36-year-old lecturer Neha in Jalandhar has taken a serious turn, with her family alleging that she was forcibly made to consume toilet cleaner by her husband, mother-in-law and her husband’s alleged lover. Following her death, police added murder and criminal conspiracy charges to the case.
Marriage in 2019, Trouble Allegedly Began After a Year
According to Neha’s family, she married Kartarpur Mandi resident Umang Bassi in February 2019 through a matrimonial website. The couple initially had a normal married life and later welcomed a daughter, six-year-old Kiara.
However, Neha’s sister-in-law Divya alleged that problems began around a year after the marriage. She claimed that Neha was repeatedly harassed by her husband and mother-in-law Kusum Bassi.
Family Alleges Husband’s Relationship With Another Woman
The family has alleged that Umang developed a relationship with Satpal Kaur, described as his alleged lover and childhood classmate. According to Divya, Neha had discovered chats between the two and confronted her husband several times.
The family claims that Umang subsequently threatened Neha, allegedly telling her that he would marry Satpal in front of her.
Brother Names Husband’s Alleged Lover in Case
Neha’s brother Amrish Kumar has alleged that Satpal Kaur was present when Neha was allegedly forced to consume toilet cleaner.
According to the family’s allegation, Umang, Kusum and Satpal collectively forced the substance into Neha’s mouth. Based on the brother’s statement, police have now named Satpal Kaur as an accused along with Umang Bassi.
These allegations remain subject to police investigation and judicial proceedings.
Neha Admitted to Hospital in Critical Condition
Neha was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Jalandhar on August 19 in a critical condition. Her family alleges that relatives were informed only on August 20, when her condition had already deteriorated significantly.
Doctors reportedly found her unable to speak and placed her on a ventilator. Police subsequently approached a magistrate to record her statement.
Family Says Neha Named Three People Before Death
According to Neha’s family, a magistrate recorded her statement at the hospital. They claim Neha identified her husband, mother-in-law and Satpal Kaur and alleged that they had jointly forced her to consume toilet cleaner.
Police are expected to establish the exact circumstances through the statement, medical evidence, forensic investigation and other evidence collected during the probe.
Final Moments: Neha Wanted to See Her Six-Year-Old Daughter
One of the most emotional aspects of the case is Neha’s alleged final wish to see her daughter Kiara.
Her sister-in-law Divya said Neha continued looking for her daughter while on the ventilator and repeatedly expressed her desire to see her before dying. The family has now requested that Kiara’s custody be handed over to them, citing concerns about the child’s safety.
Family Alleges Threats and Political Influence
Neha’s relatives have also alleged that Umang frequently carried a pistol and had previously threatened Neha with violence. They further claimed that he portrayed himself as politically connected and used photographs with a local MLA to create pressure.
These allegations have not been independently established and will have to be examined by investigators.
Police Add Murder and Conspiracy Charges
Police said they received information about Neha’s critical condition and approached the magistrate after doctors declared her unable to provide a conventional statement.
Neha died at around 8:30 pm during treatment. Following her death and the fresh statement of her brother, police added Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to murder, and Section 61(2), pertaining to criminal conspiracy.
Focus Now on Investigation and Child’s Safety
The case has raised serious questions about alleged domestic violence, marital abuse and the circumstances surrounding Neha’s death. With her husband and other accused facing serious allegations, the investigation will now focus on medical and forensic evidence, the circumstances in which the toilet cleaner was allegedly administered, and the whereabouts and safety of six-year-old Kiara.
The allegations against the accused remain to be proven before a court, and the investigation will be crucial in establishing what happened to Neha in the final days of her life.
