Police says ‘digital arrest’ through phone or video call is a scam
The Commissionerate Police Jalandhar has issued a public warning against cyber scams involving the term “Digital Arrest.” The police advisory makes it clear that no police officer or government agency can place a person under “digital arrest” over a phone or video call.
The warning comes with an appeal to people to remain calm and alert if they receive calls in which the caller threatens them with a criminal case or claims that their Aadhaar or mobile number is linked to a crime.
Criminal case threats and money demands among red flags
According to the advisory shared by Jalandhar Police, people should be cautious when callers use threats or pressure to make them follow instructions. Claims that a person is under “digital arrest” have been highlighted as a major red flag.
Police has also warned against transferring money to “clear” an investigation. People have been specifically advised not to share sensitive financial or personal information, including OTPs, PINs, passwords or bank details, with such callers.
Police warns against unknown links and screen sharing
The advisory also asks citizens not to click on unknown links. It further warns people against installing apps or sharing their phone screen when asked to do so by suspicious callers.
The message advises people to disconnect the call immediately instead of continuing with a caller who makes such demands.
Verify the caller before taking any action
Jalandhar Police has advised citizens to verify such claims with the concerned police department. The message stresses that people should not transfer money under pressure and should remain alert when dealing with suspicious calls.
The police advisory also asks citizens to report cyber fraud without delay.
1930 helpline highlighted for cyber fraud reporting
For reporting cyber fraud, the advisory highlights the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 and the website cybercrime.gov.in.
