Jalandhar experienced relentless heavy rains late Sunday evening, continuing persistently on for over six hours, resulting in unprecedented waterlogging in the city. Relentless rain caused massive disruption as water entered houses, markets, and roads, rendering daily life and movement difficult for people
Scattered water logging in Jalandhar has paralyzed most significant areas and major connecting roads of the city, causing traffic movement and connectivity disruption.
Some of the most affected areas of Jalandhar are the Model Town, Jalandhar Cantonment, Lamba Pind Chowk, Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Kapurthala Chowk, and 120 Feet Road.
Roads at these locations are waterlogged, resulting in traffic jams and vehicle breakdowns. Reportedly marketplaces and residential communities are flooded, which blocks free movement and is inconvenient to locals and traders alike.
Apart from these specific connecting routes the industrial belt of Jalandhar including the Industrial Area and Rama Mandi has also witnessed water stagnation, which has been inconvenience to industry and damage to property. Urban Estate Phase 1 and 2 underpasses and other low-lying areas have been flooded, and commuters have no alternative but to take alternate routes.
Waterlogging has also spread to densely populated commercial areas such as Railway Road, Attari Bazaar, Peera Bodla Bazaar, and Bhagat Singh Chowk, where water is waist or knee deep in certain locations.
Authorities have reacted by conducting unbreakable relief efforts, drainage, and surveillance by officials such as Deputy Commissioner Dr. Himanshu Aggarwal, who visited affected areas personally.
The administration has asked people not to travel to the areas mentioned above and decide on travel plans accordingly in a bid to minimize traffic inconvenience and danger. Emergency helplines have been opened to help residents with immediate concerns.
District officials are seeking cooperation from the National Highways Authority of India and the local municipal corporations to arrange for expedited clearance of water clogging on major highways and slip roads.
This is done to ensure smooth movement of traffic. Educational institutions in the affected areas of Punjab have been closed until further notice due to the fact that the roads are being obstructed by heavy flooding.
