The Punjab government on Tuesday suspended two senior IAS officers, though no official reason was disclosed at the time of the action. According to sources, the decision is primarily linked to prolonged delays in the procurement of smartphones intended for Anganwadi workers under a government welfare scheme.

The suspended officers are Kamal Kishore Yadav, then Administrative Secretary of the Department of Industries, Investment Promotion and Information Technology, and Jaspreet Singh, Managing Director of Punjab Infotech. Sources said both officers were responsible for overseeing the smartphone procurement process, which reportedly faced repeated procedural and coordination-related delays.

Sources further revealed that the scheme to provide smartphones to Anganwadi workers was announced on August 12, 2022, but failed to take off despite more than 14 review meetings held at various administrative levels. Punjab Infotech was entrusted with the responsibility of procurement, during which multiple issues related to tendering, coordination, and execution were flagged.

Following complaints over the prolonged delay and lack of progress, the matter was reviewed at the administrative level, after which suspension orders were issued.

Sources said the delay in smartphone procurement is a key reason behind the suspension. They also indicated that other factors may have contributed, though these have not been officially disclosed.

The decision also reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to delivering public services efficiently. By taking strict action against lapses, the administration is sending a clear message that it prioritizes the timely implementation of welfare initiatives, ensuring that benefits reach Anganwadi workers and other frontline staff without unnecessary delay.
