In a significant boost to the city’s infrastructure, the Punjab Government has approved the construction of two new Railway Overbridges (ROBs) at Garha Railway Crossing and Chugitti Railway Crossing. The projects are expected to provide long-term relief from traffic snarls caused by frequent railway gate closures and increasing vehicular movement.
According to the proposed plan, the Garha ROB will start from the area near Reliance Mall and extend up to Silver Residency. The overbridge is being designed as a double-lane structure with service roads on both sides to ensure smooth movement of local traffic. The project is expected to significantly reduce congestion on one of the city’s busiest railway crossings.
The proposed Chugitti ROB will connect the Chugitti area with the Ladowali Road side, creating a seamless traffic corridor and improving access between various residential and commercial zones. Railway land availability on one side is expected to facilitate construction and reduce implementation hurdles.
Sources indicate that the combined cost of the two ROB projects is expected to run into several hundred crore rupees, with detailed estimates and final alignments currently being prepared by the concerned departments. The projects will be executed jointly by railway and state government agencies after the completion of technical surveys, design approvals and land acquisition formalities.
The Garha ROB is likely to require additional land on certain stretches, and officials are assessing the impact on commercial establishments and roadside structures that fall within the proposed alignment. Stakeholder consultations and compensation-related discussions are expected to be part of the next phase of planning.
Once completed, the two ROBs will eliminate long waiting times at railway crossings, reduce fuel wastage caused by traffic jams, improve emergency vehicle movement, and strengthen connectivity between different parts of Jalandhar. Civic officials believe the projects will play a crucial role in supporting the city’s future growth and transportation needs.
The proposed overbridges are being viewed as among the most important infrastructure initiatives planned for Jalandhar in recent years and are expected to benefit thousands of commuters daily.
The new over bridge will be constructed at busy railway crossing near bus stand and PIMS Hospital area and the project is expected to provide a long term solution to traffic congestion caused by frequent railway gate closures at the crossing, thousands of commuters including students, office-goers, traders and local residents use this route every day.
According to approved plan Garha ROB will connect Bus Stand Chowk with Defence Colony turn near PIMS Hospital and once completed vehicles will be able to move over the railway tracks without having to stop at railway crossing during train movements. The bridge has been designed as a two-lane Road Over Bridge and will have an overall length of approximately 873 metres and railway authorities have planned the structure in a way that meets both present and future traffic requirements.
Heavy machinery is expected to be installed soon to begin construction work and once completed the Garha Road Over Bridge is expected to become an important addition to Jalandhar's transport infrastructure, providing smoother traffic flow and improved connectivity across one of city's busiest railway crossings.
Another major infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic congestion in Jalandhar is set to begin at the busy Guru Nanak Pura railway crossing, where an arch-shaped Road Over Bridge (ROB) will be constructed on the Delhi–Jammu railway route. The project is considered crucial as more than 100 trains pass through this section every day.
According to the project design, the new ROB will include a distinctive arch-shaped steel structure. The introduction of this structure will make it one of the most modern railway overbridges planned in the city. The bridge will be approximately 300 to 500 metres long and will include a steel arc superstructure over the railway tracks. To ease out the people walking dedicated pedestrian pathways on both sides will be built. Keeping safety in mind, all necessary measures are been taken care of. This is done by building railings and safety barriers along with inclusion of service lanes beneath the bridge for local movement. Improved access for residents living around the crossing is taken important care of. The ROB will be different from other conventional ROB’S around the city. The main portion of the bridge will consist of a steel arch supported by strong retaining walls and approach ramps.
Once completed, the project is expected to provide uninterrupted connectivity, reduced waiting time at railway gates and improved traffic movement for thousands of commuters travelling through one of Jalandhar’s busiest corridors every day.
