
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for seven districts in Punjab including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, and Mohali, warning of heavy rainfall today. The situation remains grim in Tarn Taran and adjoining districts due to waterlogging and overflowing canals.
According to official data released on Saturday, the Pong Dam water level was recorded at 1382.75 feet with an inflow of 38,395 cusecs, while the outflow was much higher at 74,427 cusecs. Similarly, the Bhakra Dam reported a water level of 1666.96 feet with an inflow of 54,870 cusecs and outflow of 43,342 cusecs.
At the Harike Headworks, the water level touched 688 feet, receiving 1,46,120 cusecs of water. Of this, 8,037 cusecs was released into the Ferozepur feeder, 13,795 cusecs into the Rajasthan feeder, and 187 cusecs into the Makhu canal. A massive 1,24,101 cusecs was discharged downstream, worsening the flood-like situation from Tarn Taran to Fazilka. Amritsar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, and Moga districts are also facing rising flood concerns.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the rainfall will continue over the next two days. On August 25 (Monday), yellow alerts remain in place for Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar. Similar conditions are expected on August 26 (Tuesday). However, the monsoon is likely to weaken across Punjab starting August 27.
